Is it safe to repair my own dryer?
Most dryer issues are safe for DIY repair if you follow basic safety steps: always unplug the dryer before opening it, never work on gas lines or burner assemblies, and know when to call a professional. Electric dryers use 240V — unplugging is non-negotiable.
How much does it cost to fix a dryer?
DIY repairs typically cost $10-$80 for parts. Professional repairs run $150-$400 depending on the issue. A new dryer costs $400-$1,200. As a rule of thumb: fix it if repair costs less than half of replacement and the dryer is under 10 years old.
How do I know if my dryer vent is clogged?
Run the dryer on hot for 10 minutes, then go outside and feel the vent exit. Airflow should be strong, like a box fan on high. If it's weak or barely there, your vent is clogged and needs cleaning. Other signs: clothes take forever to dry, dryer gets too hot.
Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?
Yes. The NFPA reports 15,000 dryer fires per year in the US, and 32% are caused by clogged vents. Lint is extremely flammable and ignites at 550°F — well within normal dryer operating temperatures. Clean your vent at least once a year.
Why does my dryer have no heat?
80% of no-heat issues are caused by a clogged vent or dirty lint filter. Other common causes: burned-out heating element, faulty thermal fuse, bad thermostat, or (on gas dryers) broken igniter. Check the vent and filter FIRST — they're free to fix.
How often should I clean the lint filter?
Before EVERY SINGLE LOAD. It takes 10 seconds. A clogged lint filter reduces airflow by 50%, making drying take 2x longer and stressing the dryer. Also wash the filter with warm soapy water once a month to remove fabric softener buildup.
Is a gas dryer better than electric?
Gas dryers cost more upfront ($50-$100) but cost about 50% less to run per cycle over time. However, gas dryers require professional installation and pose safety risks. Electric dryers are simpler, safer, and work in every home.
How long should a dryer last?
With proper maintenance (annual vent cleaning, lint filter every load), a quality dryer should last 12-15 years. Cheap budget brands may only last 8-10 years. Most major brands offer a 1-year warranty on parts and labor.
Should I repair or replace my dryer?
Replace if: the dryer is over 10 years old, repair cost exceeds 50% of a new dryer price, or it has multiple failing components. Repair if: it's under 8 years old, just one part failed, and you can do the repair yourself.
Why is my dryer making a loud squealing noise?
Squealing almost always means worn drum rollers (the plastic wheels that support the drum). They cost $20-$40 for a pair and take 20 minutes to replace. Other possibilities: loose belt, bad idler pulley, or drum felt seal wearing out.
Can I use dryer sheets in my dryer?
You can, but we recommend wool dryer balls instead. Dryer sheets leave a waxy residue that clogs lint filters and moisture sensors over time. Dryer balls are reusable, cheaper, and actually shorten drying time.
How do I reset my dryer after an error code?
The universal reset: unplug for 5 minutes, let it sit, plug back in. Many models also have a 'reset' button or a button combination (try POWER + START held 10 seconds, or turn the cycle selector left 3 times). If the error returns, you need to fix the underlying problem.
